[English]Experts say stigma keeps gay men on prowl for anonymous encounters
Why would a well-known city official choose a public park in broad daylight as the forum for a sexual encounter?Source: [Tens de ter uma conta e sessão iniciada para poderes visualizar este link]
Experts say Taunton City Councilor Daniel M. Barbour was actually trying to hide his behavior when he allegedly propositioned an undercover male cop in D.W. Field Park Wednesday afternoon. Barbour was arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious conduct.
“Unfortunately I think this is a result of homosexuality still being stigmatized, especially for people who hold public office,” said Teresa King, an associate professor of psychology at Bridgewater State College. “(Public officials) are more concerned about their public image as they need to be voted into office.”
The practice is known as “cruising.” Gay men meet up in public rest stops, pornographic video stores and parks to engage in covert sexual activity. Cruising dates back many years to a time when anti-gay prejudice was even more widespread than it is today.
In 1999, for example, area officials cracked down on rest stops across the Brockton region after men reported being approached, and in at least one instance, sexually assaulted, by other men.
But the silence around homosexuality isn’t over – and neither is the desire among some gay men to keep their sexuality hidden, said clinical social worker Mark Dunay.
“These are people who are not out, and so they cruise and they have anonymous, rapid-fire sexual encounters,” said Dunay. “Then they go back to a life in the closet.”
The practice of “cruising,” grew out of anti-gay prejudice, said Joseph Winn, a clinical social worker and sex therapist who practices in Arlington.
“I think cruising is definitely a tradition in the gay community, primarily because it was not safe to be identified as gay,” said Winn. “The stigma around men having sex with men would make it easier to just go cruise with someone; you don’t have to run the risk of being exposed as openly gay.”
But some advocates point out that cruising isn’t restricted to the gay community.
“I don’t think cruising for sex is unique to our community,” said DeeDee Edmondson, political director at the LGBT equality group MassEquality. “Unfortunately there are stupid politicians, both gay and straight.”
Winn, who counsels both gay and straight couples, said many of his heterosexual clients enjoy having sex in public.
“I hear frequently about how they engage in public sex,” said Winn. “There aren’t folks roaming public parks looking for heterosexual couples having sex in cars.”
Heterosexual men looking for casual sex (public or otherwise) may have an easier time than a closeted gay man when it comes to finding a sexual partner, noted Mark Dunay.
“For a heterosexual man, if he wants to hook up he goes to a bar,” said Dunay. “Straight culture is one thing. You can go out to a bar hoping to meet a woman or a man, and it’s culturally sanctioned.”
Some gay public officials may feel they can’t have long-term, romantic partnerships, because their constituents might disapprove, said Winn. Instead, they may choose more promiscuous, covert sexual behavior that is disconnected from their public life. That disconnect can lead to risk-taking, Winn said.
“From a cultural perspective, internalized homophobia often results in people taking risks with their own health and well-being that they may not take if they lived in a more gay-accepting culture,” said Winn.
But Edmondson noted that there are plenty of gay politicians, including Republican state Senate minority leader and candidate for lieutenant governor Richard Tisei.
“There are plenty of examples of people living openly and leading very public lives,” said Edmondson. “It is unfortunate that people think they can’t live openly.”
Muito chato as pessoas terem que se esconder assim. Por outro lado, é constrangedor, e até ofensivo, ser cantada por desconhecidos na rua, e isso faria os homens sentirem na pele `-´
